Thể ない

The ない-form is the negative of the plain form: 読まない "don't read". It is the foundation of many N5 patterns: 〜ないでください (please don't), 〜なければなりません (must do), 〜なくてもいいです (don't have to do).

Group I changes the final う-row sound to the あ-row and adds ない: 書く → 書かない, 読む → 読まない; verbs ending in う change it to わ: 買う → 買わない. Group II drops る and adds ない: 食べる → 食べない. Group III: する → しない, 来る → 来ない (read こない).

An exception worth remembering: the negative of ある is ない, not あらない.

• ここで写真(しゃしん)を撮(と)らないでください。

  Please don't take photos here.

• 毎朝(まいあさ)六時(ろくじ)に起(お)きなければなりません。

  I have to get up at 6 every morning.

• 図書館(としょかん)で電話(でんわ)しないでください。

  Please don't make phone calls in the library.
