〜なくちゃいけない・〜なければなりません

Must do something (obligation)machine translation

FormationVerb ない-form (drop い) + ければなりません/くちゃいけない

This pattern expresses obligation: "must do something". The standard, polite form is 〜なければなりません; in casual conversation Japanese speakers often shorten it to 〜なくちゃいけない (or even shorter: 〜なくちゃ).

How to form the standard version: put the verb in the ない-form, drop the final い, and add ければなりません: 行く → 行かない → 行かなければなりません.

Note: this pattern is about things you are required to do. To say "it's fine not to do it", use 〜なくてもいいです.
