〜ないでください

Use 〜ないでください when you want to politely ask or request that someone not do something.

How to form it: verb ない-form + でください. It is the "negative version" of 〜てください.

Compared with 〜てはいけません (an outright prohibition), 〜ないでください sounds much softer and more polite, so it suits strangers or people above you.

Examples

• 教室(きょうしつ)で食(た)べないでください。

  Please don't eat in the classroom.

• ドアを開(あ)けないでください。

  Please don't open the door.

• 電気(でんき)を消(け)さないでください。

  Please don't turn off the lights.
