〜じゃありません

Is not (negative of です)machine translation

FormationNoun + じゃありません

じゃありません is the negative form of です, meaning "is not." It goes right after a noun: 学生じゃありません — "is not a student."

じゃ is a contracted way of saying では, so in formal writing you'll see ではありません — the meaning is exactly the same. In conversation there's also the form じゃないです, a bit more casual but still polite.

Note: じゃありません is only for nouns and な-adjectives. い-adjectives negate in their own way (〜くないです), which you'll learn in the adjectives section.
