〜でした・〜じゃありませんでした
Was / was not (past tense of です)machine translation
FormationNoun + でした / じゃありませんでした
でした is the past form of です, meaning "was, used to be." The past negative is じゃありませんでした — "was not." Both go after a noun or a な-adjective.
Japanese marks past tense right at the end of the sentence, unlike Vietnamese, which usually adds "đã" or relies on context. So when talking about 昨日 (yesterday) or 先週 (last week), train yourself to switch です to でした reflexively.
Note that い-adjectives don't take でした — they change their ending to 〜かったです (e.g. 暑い → 暑かったです). This is a very common mistake, so watch out for it from the start.
