Tính từ đuôi い

い-adjectives end in the sound い: 暑い, 大きい, 難しい…. To speak politely, just add です: 暑いです. Negative: drop い and add くないです (or, more formally, くありません): 難しい → 難しくないです.

When modifying a noun, an い-adjective goes directly before the noun with nothing added: 大きい犬 "a big dog."

Watch out for the irregular adjective いい (good): its negative is よくないです, not いくないです.

Examples

• 今日(きょう)は暑(あつ)いです。

  It's hot today.

• この宿題(しゅくだい)は難(むずか)しくないです。

  This homework isn't difficult.

• 私(わたし)の家(いえ)に大(おお)きい犬(いぬ)がいます。

  We have a big dog at home.
