〜かったです・〜くなかったです

For the past tense, drop い and add かったです: 寒い → 寒かったです "it was cold (that day)." Past negative: drop い and add くなかったです: 面白い → 面白くなかったです.

A common mistake: using でした with い-adjectives. 寒いでした is wrong — い-adjectives change their own ending, and です only follows to keep the sentence polite.

The adjective いい (good) conjugates irregularly from the stem よ: よかったです, よくなかったです.

• 昨日(きのう)はとても寒(さむ)かったです。

  It was very cold yesterday.

• その映画(えいが)は面白(おもしろ)くなかったです。

  That movie wasn't interesting.

• 先週(せんしゅう)の旅行(りょこう)はよかったです。
