〜と〜とどちら

To ask a comparison between TWO things, use: AとBと、どちらが〜ですか. The answer usually uses the comparative pattern: 〜のほうが〜です.

The special point: whether you're comparing people, things, places, or times, the question word is always どちら — it does not change to だれ or どこ as in ordinary questions.

In casual speech, どちら is often shortened to どっち. When comparing three or more things, switch to the pattern 〜のなかで〜がいちばん.

• コーヒーと紅茶(こうちゃ)と、どちらが好(す)きですか。

  Which do you like better, coffee or black tea?

• 肉(にく)と魚(さかな)と、どちらをよく食(た)べますか。

  Which do you eat more often, meat or fish?

• バスと電車(でんしゃ)と、どちらが速(はや)いですか。

  Which is faster, the bus or the train?
