〜のほうが〜より

To compare "A more than B", use the frame: AのほうがBより + adjective. ほう literally means "side", and より means "compared to".

You can reverse the order: BよりAのほうが… — the meaning stays the same. Just remember: the noun right before より is always the "losing" side.

Good news: Japanese adjectives keep their form in comparisons, unlike Vietnamese "nhanh → nhanh hơn". The のほうが〜より frame alone gives the sentence its comparative meaning.

• 飛行機(ひこうき)のほうが電車(でんしゃ)より速(はや)いです。

  Airplanes are faster than trains.

• 夏(なつ)より冬(ふゆ)のほうが好(す)きです。

  I like winter more than summer.

• この店(みせ)のほうがあの店(みせ)より安(やす)いです。

  This shop is cheaper than that shop.
