The て-form is the connective form of the verb, used in a great many N5 patterns: making requests (〜てください), describing an action in progress (〜ています), linking successive actions (〜てから).
Group I conjugates by final sound: う・つ・る → って (買う → 買って, 待つ → 待って); ぬ・ぶ・む → んで (読む → 読んで); く → いて (書く → 書いて); ぐ → いで (泳ぐ → 泳いで); す → して (話す → 話して). The single exception: 行く → 行って. Group II just drops る and adds て: 食べる → 食べて. Group III: する → して, 来る → 来て (read きて).
Memorize the て-form conjugation table as early as you can — the た-form conjugates exactly the same way, just changing て to た.
