Thể た

The た-form — past tense of the plain form, base of many patternsmachine translation

FormationConjugates exactly like the て-form, changing て → た・で → だ

The た-form is the past tense of the plain form: 読んだ "read (past)". It appears in N5 patterns such as 〜たことがあります (have done before), 〜たり〜たりします (listing actions), and 〜たほうがいいです (should do).

It conjugates exactly like the て-form, just changing て to た and で to だ. Group I: 買う → 買った, 読む → 読んだ, 書く → 書いた; the exception is 行く → 行った. Group II drops る and adds た: 見る → 見た. Group III: する → した, 来る → 来た (read きた).

So if you already know the て-form by heart, the た-form takes almost no extra study.
