〜ています

〜ています has two main meanings: (1) an action in progress — 「雨が降っています。」= It is raining; (2) an ongoing state — 住んでいます (live somewhere), 働いています (work somewhere), 結婚しています (be married).

How to form it: verb て-form + います. The negative is 〜ていません, the past is 〜ていました.

Note: verbs like 住む and 働く are almost always used in the 〜ています form when talking about the present; if you say 東京に住みます, the sentence instead means the future "will live".

Examples

• 今(いま)、雨(あめ)が降(ふ)っています。

  It is raining right now.

• 兄(あに)は銀行(ぎんこう)で働(はたら)いています。

  My older brother works at a bank.

• 田中(たなか)さんは東京(とうきょう)に住(す)んでいます。

  Tanaka lives in Tokyo.
