〜すぎる

Attach すぎる to a verb or adjective to say something goes beyond the normal level: eating too much, too expensive, too hard.

How to connect: verb ます-form minus ます + すぎます (食べます → 食べすぎます); い-adjective minus い + すぎます (高い → 高すぎます); な-adjective minus な + すぎます (静か → 静かすぎます).

〜すぎる usually carries a critical or complaining tone; it is not used for praise. すぎる itself conjugates as a group 2 verb: すぎます・すぎました.

• ゆうべ食(た)べすぎました。

  I ate too much last night.

• このかばんは高(たか)すぎます。

  This bag is too expensive.

• きのうお酒(さけ)を飲(の)みすぎました。

  I drank too much alcohol yesterday.
