〜ます・〜ません・〜ました・〜ませんでした

The ます-form is the polite form of verbs, used for both the present and the future. Four forms: 読みます (read / will read), 読みません (don't read), 読みました (read [past]), 読みませんでした (didn't read).

How to form the ます stem by group: group I changes the final う-row sound to the い-row sound and adds ます (読む → 読みます, 書く → 書きます); group II drops る and adds ます (見る → 見ます, 食べる → 食べます); group III is irregular: する → します, 来る → 来ます (read きます).

When you're just starting out, using the ます-form in every conversation is the safe choice — save the plain form for close friends.

Examples

• 毎朝(まいあさ)新聞(しんぶん)を読(よ)みます。

  I read the newspaper every morning.

• 昨日(きのう)はテレビを見(み)ませんでした。

  I didn't watch TV yesterday.

• 先週(せんしゅう)友達(ともだち)と図書館(としょかん)で勉強(べんきょう)しました。

  Last week I studied at the library with a friend.
