Where counters go in a sentencemachine translation
FormationNoun + particle + counter + verb
In Japanese, a counter usually comes AFTER the noun and its particle, right before the verb: りんごを二つ買います — buy two apples. Do not add any particle after the counter.
Each kind of thing uses its own counter: 〜つ for objects in general (ひとつ、ふたつ… up to ここのつ), 〜人 for people, 〜枚 for thin, flat things like paper, tickets, and shirts.
Watch out for the special readings when counting people: one person is ひとり, two people is ふたり, and only from three people on do you read 〜にん (さんにん、よにん…).
