〜がいます

Use 〜がいます to say that a person or animal is present or exists somewhere: 「子供がいます」= there are children.

The full pattern: place に + noun が + います. This pattern is also used to talk about family: 兄が二人います = I have two older brothers.

Vietnamese has only one word "có" (to have / there is), but Japanese splits it in two: います for people and animals, あります for inanimate things. The negative of います is いません.

Examples

• 公園(こうえん)に子供(こども)がいます。

  There are children in the park.

• 私(わたし)は兄(あに)が二人(ふたり)います。

  I have two older brothers.

• うちに犬(いぬ)がいます。

  We have a dog at home.
