〜があります

Use 〜があります to say that something exists or is somewhere — for inanimate things: objects, plants, buildings, events. 「本があります」= there is a book.

The full pattern: place に + noun が + あります. Beyond existence, this pattern also expresses possession (宿題があります = I have homework) and events (パーティーがあります = there's a party).

Important note: for people and animals you must use います, not あります. The negative of あります is ありません.

• 机(つくえ)の上(うえ)に本(ほん)があります。

  There is a book on the desk.

• 家(いえ)の近(ちか)くにスーパーがあります。

  There is a supermarket near my house.

• 今日(きょう)は宿題(しゅくだい)がたくさんあります。

  I have a lot of homework today.
