〜つもりです

Use the verb dictionary form + つもりです to talk about an intention — something you have decided on and plan to do.

To say you intend NOT to do something, use the ない-form + つもりです: 買わないつもりです — I intend not to buy it.

Compared with 〜たいです (just a wish), つもりです is firmer: you have already decided, not merely hoped. Avoid using つもり to directly ask a superior about their plans, as it can sound prying.

Examples

• 夏休(なつやす)みに国(くに)へ帰(かえ)るつもりです。

  I intend to go back to my country for summer vacation.

• 来年(らいねん)、日本(にほん)へ行(い)くつもりです。

  I intend to go to Japan next year.

• 車(くるま)は買(か)わないつもりです。

  I intend not to buy a car.
