〜でしょう

Use でしょう when guessing or forecasting something you're not entirely sure about: "probably," "most likely." Weather forecasts in Japan use でしょう all the time.

How to connect: plain form + でしょう. Nouns and な-adjectives drop だ: 雨でしょう, 静かでしょう.

Said with rising intonation at the end (でしょう？), the sentence shifts to a confirming "right?", close to ね.

Examples

• 明日(あした)は雨(あめ)が降(ふ)るでしょう。

  It will probably rain tomorrow.

• 山田(やまだ)さんは今日(きょう)来(こ)ないでしょう。

  Yamada probably won't come today.

• このケーキ、おいしいでしょう？

  This cake is delicious, isn't it?
