ね・よ

ね and よ are two sentence-ending particles that make speech more natural. ね seeks the listener's agreement, like "nhỉ, nhé" in Vietnamese: いい天気ですね (Nice weather, isn't it?). よ emphasizes information the listener doesn't know yet, like "đấy, đó": この店は安いですよ (This shop is really cheap, you know).

Rule of thumb: information both of you know and feel together → ね; information only you know and want to tell the listener → よ.

Be careful not to overuse よ — used in the wrong place it sounds like you're lecturing. ね is safe, and Japanese people use it very frequently.

• この店(みせ)は安(やす)いですよ。

  This shop is really cheap, you know.
