使役形(〜させる)
Causative — making or letting someone do somethingmachine translation
FormationGroup I: う-row → あ-row + せる; group II: drop る + させる; する → させる、来る → 来させる
The causative expresses making or allowing someone to do something: 食べさせる can mean either "make (someone) eat" or "let (someone) eat" — context decides. The person ordering or permitting is always in the higher position: parent–child, teacher–student, boss–subordinate.
Conjugation: group I changes the final sound from the う-row to the あ-row and adds せる: 読む → 読ませる, 書く → 書かせる; verbs ending in う change it to わ: 買う → 買わせる. Group II drops る and adds させる: 食べる → 食べさせる, 見る → 見させる. Group III: する → させる, 来る → 来させる (こさせる). The result always conjugates further as a group II verb.
The particle for the person being made to act depends on the verb: with a transitive verb, that person takes に because を is reserved for the direct object (弟に野菜を食べさせる); with an intransitive verb, the person takes を (学生を家に帰らせる — let the students go home).
To ask permission humbly, combine the causative with 〜てください into 〜させてください ("please let me…") — covered in the next lesson.
