に・へ

に and へ both mark the destination of movement verbs like 行きます (go), 来ます (come), 帰ります (return): 東京に行きます = 東京へ行きます (go to Tokyo).

The difference is very small: に emphasizes the destination point, へ emphasizes the direction "toward". At the N5 level you can use them interchangeably; in everyday conversation に is more common.

Note on reading: as a particle, へ is read え, not へ — just like the particle は being read わ.

• 明日(あした)東京(とうきょう)へ行(い)きます。

  I'm going to Tokyo tomorrow.

• 友達(ともだち)がうちに来(き)ました。

  My friend came over to my house.

• 兄(あに)は外国(がいこく)に行(い)きました。

  My older brother went abroad.
