〜てよかった

〜てよかった expresses relief or gladness that something happened or that you did something: 予約しておいてよかった (I'm glad I reserved a spot in advance). In Vietnamese it corresponds to "may mà…" ("good thing that…") and "thật tốt vì đã…" ("it's really good that…").

The negative form is 〜なくてよかった: glad that something did NOT happen — 雨が降らなくてよかった (I'm glad it didn't rain).

Don't confuse it with 〜ばよかった (covered in the conditionals section): 〜てよかった is being glad something DID happen, while 〜ばよかった is regret that something didn't happen — 行ってよかった (I'm glad I went) is the exact opposite of 行けばよかった (I wish I had gone).

Examples

• 早(はや)く予約(よやく)しておいてよかったです。

  I'm glad I made a reservation early.

• あなたに会(あ)えてよかったです。

  I'm glad I got to meet you.

• 雨(あめ)が降(ふ)らなくてよかったですね。

  Good thing it didn't rain, huh?
