〜てすみません

〜てすみません is used to apologize while giving the reason: 遅れてすみません (sorry for being late). This is exactly the cause-stating use of the て-form you've learned, with the second clause fixed as すみません. When the matter is fully in the past or you want to be more formal, use すみませんでした.

To apologize for NOT doing something, use the ない-form: 〜なくてすみません — 電話に出られなくてすみません (sorry I couldn't answer the phone).

With close friends, replace すみません with ごめん・ごめんね: 遅れてごめんね. Conversely, at work or with superiors, you'll hear the more polite form 〜て申し訳ありません.

• 昨日(きのう)は電話(でんわ)に出(で)られなくてすみませんでした。

  Sorry I couldn't answer the phone yesterday.
