〜のように
To do something / be some way like…machine translation
FormationNoun + のように + verb/adjective
〜のように makes a simile about manner or degree, modifying a verb or adjective: 鳥のように飛ぶ (fly like a bird), 春のように暖かい (warm like spring). The noun before のように is the image being compared to.
The pair のような・のように works exactly like a な-adjective: before a noun use のような (夢のような話), before a verb or adjective use のように (夢のように楽しい). Just look at the part of speech that follows to pick the right form.
In casual speech, replace it with みたいに: 鳥みたいに飛びたい. Also don't confuse it with the purpose pattern 〜ように (covered in the conditionals–purpose section): the simile 〜のように always comes right after noun + の, while purpose ように comes after a verb.
