〜んですが、…
Softening the lead-in before a request or questionmachine translation
FormationPlain form + んですが (nouns and な-adjectives + なんですが)
〜んですが is the standard conversation opener in Japanese: state your situation with 〜んです (the explanatory form), then use が to soften the transition before your question or request: 道が分からないんですが、教えていただけませんか.
んです is the spoken form of のです, attached after the plain form; nouns and な-adjectives insert な: 学生なんです. It signals to the listener "I'm explaining my situation" — which is exactly why it sounds so natural before a request: the listener immediately understands why you need help.
The が here isn't quite "but" — it just softens the sentence and hands the turn to the other person. Japanese speakers often stop right at 〜んですが… and let the listener infer the rest. In casual conversation, use 〜んだけど — see the けど lesson.
