〜方

How to do somethingmachine translation

FormationVerb ます-form (drop ます) + 方(かた)

To say "how to do something", take the verb's ます-form, drop ます, and add 方(かた): 読みます → 読み方 (how to read), 使います → 使い方 (how to use), 作ります → 作り方 (how to make, how to cook).

The whole unit becomes a noun, so it takes particles like any ordinary noun: 読み方を教えてください (please teach me how to read it), 使い方が分かりません (I don't know how to use it).

Note when the verb has an object: the particle を usually changes to の — 漢字を読む but 漢字の読み方 (how to read kanji). With する-group verbs like 勉強する, the common expression is 勉強の仕方(しかた).
