〜かどうか

〜かどうか embeds a yes/no question inside a larger sentence: 行くかどうかまだ決めていません (I still haven't decided whether to go or not). The clause before かどうか is in the plain form; nouns and な-adjectives DROP だ: 学生かどうか, 元気かどうか.

After かどうか you usually find verbs like 分かりません, 知りません, 覚えていません, 調べます, 聞きます, 決めます. The whole chunk works as a noun, so it can take the particle を: 正しいかどうかを調べる.

かどうか is only for YES/NO questions. If the question contains a question word (何, だれ, どこ, いつ…), use the pattern 疑問詞＋か — see the indirect-question lesson.

  I don't know whether it will be sunny tomorrow or not.
