〜に対して
Toward; in contrast tomachine translation
FormationNoun + に対して; modifying a noun: に対する + noun; plain form + の + に対して (contrast meaning)
Noun + に対して marks the target that an action, attitude, or emotion is directed straight at: 先生に対して失礼なことを言う (say something rude to a teacher). When modifying a noun, use に対する: 質問に対する答え (the answer to a question).
The boundaries with the other compound particles in this group: について introduces the content of a topic, while に対して marks the receiving target — 日本について話す (talk about Japan) differs from 日本に対して抗議する (protest against Japan). With にとって, what follows is an evaluation, not an action: 私にとって大切だ is correct, but 私に対して大切だ is wrong; conversely, "he is angry AT ME" must be 私に対して怒っている, not にとって.
The second meaning: 〜のに対して expresses contrast, "whereas, in contrast to": 兄は静かなのに対して、弟はにぎやかだ (whereas the older brother is quiet, the younger brother is lively). This sense is close to 一方で, but のに対して sets the two clauses against each other more sharply.
