〜は〜で有名

A は B で有名 means "A is famous FOR B" — B is the reason A is known: 京都は古いお寺で有名です (Kyoto is famous for its old temples). When the reason is a whole clause, add こと before で: ラーメンがおいしいことで有名 (famous because its ramen is delicious).

Don't mix up the particle で here with the で of location: 日本で有名な歌手 is "a singer famous IN Japan" (scope), while 古いお寺で有名な町 is "a town famous FOR its old temples" (reason). Context and the type of noun before で will tell you which meaning you're dealing with.

A sibling expression is として有名: 世界遺産として有名 (famous AS a World Heritage site) — として states the capacity, while で states the reason. The pattern also works for unflattering fame: あの先生は宿題が多いことで有名です (that teacher is "famous" for assigning a lot of homework).
