〜はじめる・〜おわる・〜つづける

Start / finish / continue doing somethingmachine translation

FormationVerb ます-form (drop ます) + はじめる/おわる/つづける

All three of these attach to a verb's ます-form (drop ます) to talk about the stages of an action: 〜はじめる — start (習いはじめる: start learning), 〜おわる — finish (書きおわる: finish writing), 〜つづける — continue, keep on (走りつづける: keep running).

Once combined, the whole unit conjugates like an ordinary group 2 verb: 習いはじめました, 書きおわったら, 走りつづけています.

〜はじめる states a beginning neutrally, whether planned or natural. When an action bursts out suddenly and unexpectedly, Japanese uses 〜だす (泣きだす — burst out crying); that difference is covered in detail under the 〜だす pattern.
